Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, impacts nearly 10% of children in Virginia, with diagnoses on the rise for the past two decades.

"In our communities, a lot of times we haven't addressed those issues, historically," said Martez Gurley-El, director of programs from Malon's Project. The Hampton organization is working to address the growing concern of ADHD among teens. "But as of late, we realize that we face those challenges."

Founded in 2021 in memory of 17-year-old Malon Pearson, the group helps teens build confidence and skills through creative outlets. Pearson was diagnosed with ADHD at a young age.

"In 2020-- August 24th, to be exact-- Malon's life was tragically taken. He was stabbed to death," Gurley-El said. "He spoke about a 14-story building for children, just like him, where they could learn things and not be afraid to be themselves."

While that dream hasn't yet become a reality, the organization now offers programs in creative writing, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), gardening, chess, and swimming. Gurley-El said these activities provide a safe space for teens to explore their potential.

"If they can express themselves and visualize a better possibility, then things could go their way," Gurley-El said. "We gotta get it out first and get it on paper, and it becomes real."

Through partnerships with local organizations, Malon's Project is working to expand its reach. Families involved with the group report significant improvements in focus, social skills, and academics.

"I've been so impressed with how intelligent they really are," Gurley-El said. "They just need the outlets."

But with ADHD cases-- especially among boys-- continuing to rise, Gurley-El said the need for more community solutions is urgent.

"Wraparound services and holistic programs that include the whole family are much needed," he said. "Because at the end of the day, we don't want them to go through what we've been through and what so many others are going through now."

On January 25, Malon's Project will host its 2nd annual Winter Community Event & School Supply Drive at the North Phoebus Community Center in Hampton. From 1 to 4 p.m., attendees can receive school supplies and meet the organization's new mascot, Mal Defender, designed to raise awareness about ADHD.
